Speaking at the Fighting Bob Lafollette  Fest in Baraboo , Robert F. Kennedy Jr. attacked Bush administration environmental policies.  The son of slain US Senator Bobby Kennedy, the fifty year old Robert  Kennedy  Jr.,  has just published a book, “Crimes Against Nature:  How George W. Bush and his Corporate  Pals  are Plundering the Country and Hijacking Our Democracy.”

Nick Vander Puy from the Superior Broadcast Network has more.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. leads the Natural Resources Defense Council.  He’s been working as an environmental attorney for almost two decades. Kennedy says he tried to be non-partisan about environmental matters, but the present Bush Administration has rolled back almost four hundred environmental policies.

“I don’t believe there’s any such thing as republican children or democratic children and the worst thing that can happen to the environment is that it become the province of one particular party. But you cannot speak honestly about any context today without speaking critically about this President.  This is the worst environmental President we’ve had in American history.”

Had you asked five years ago, environmental leaders around the globe, the gravest threats to the earth, you’d have received several different answers.

“They would have given you a range of answers from global warming, to overpopulation, to habit destruction, today they’ll all tell you the same thing, it’s George W. Bush, there’s no other issue today, except that one."

Kennedy says thirty years of environmental law is being eviscerated, including many provisions in the federal Clean Air and Clean Water Acts.

“Many of our laws will remain on the books, but they will be unenforceable, and we will be like Mexico which has these wonderful, poetic environmental laws, but nobody knows about them and nobody complies with them, because they can’t be enforced.”

But national political polls suggest great support for environmental protection from democrats and republicans alike.  Kennedy says this political fact is  confirmed by one of George W. Bush’s advisers.

“That eighty one percent of republicans want stronger environmental laws and want them strictly enforced, democrats are almost exactly the same,  I always say you know that eighty percent of Republicans are democrats that just don’t know what’s going on.

Frank Luntz warned the President that this radical proposition was going to alienate even the Republican base, but if they wanted to go through with this sledgehammer they’d have to do it with stealth.”

According to Kennedy, the Bush administration hired aberrant scientists to challenge global climate change, mercury pollution findings, and the impact of DDT.  This stealth attack on the environmental consensus is orchestrated by public relations experts.

“And that they use this kind of Orwellian rhetoric, disguise from the American public the radical nature of their agenda, when they’re going to destroy our forests they call it the Healthy Forests Initiative, when there going to destroy our air they call it the Clear Skies Initiative, but the worst, the most insidious is that they’ve put the worst polluters, the bottom feeders in charge of the agencies that are supposed to protect Americans from pollution.”

Kennedy names names, Steven Grilles, head of Public lands in the Department of the Interior believes that public lands are unconstitutional, the head of the US Forest Service Mark Ray is a former timber industry lobbyist, the second in command at EPA is a former Monsanto lobbyist, more than half President Bush’s top advisors have energy industry pedigrees.

The other day  a farmer sent Kennedy the American Heritage Dictionary definition of fascism, and the definition is roughly the control of government by large corporations with right wing ideologies, driven by a bellicose nationalism.  Sound familiar? Kennedy thinks the Bush regime is subverting democracy.

“And I want to say when you open government, to the corporations, these individuals who I’m talking about, who are running our agencies, they have not entered government for the public service, they have entered government specifically to subvert the laws they are charged with enforcing, and to privatize the commons, the public trust assets, the air, water, the land, the wildlife that belongs to us all, the shared assets of our community, and to turn it over to private corporation for their own profit, this is the administration of plunder.”
