Joined by hundreds of supporters, both Indian and non-Indian, Gaylord Nelson, Wisconsin's former Senator was honored for his protection of the Namekagon River.

Nelson told the crowd he would have to be "two hundred years old" before he would support the 345,000 volt ATC Arrowhead transmission line to cross the river he helped preserve back in 1968 through the passage of the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act. Nick Vander Puy of Superior Broadcast Network was at the gathering in May of 2003.

Fighting the utilities ill conceived giant electric line slicing across northwest Wisconsin, Gaylord Nelson showed up two years ago amid the big pines with hundreds of supporters at the proposed Namekagon River crossing. We all stood with him. Wisconsin Public Television filmed it.

Gaylord Nelson, Wisconsin’s former governor raised his fist into the air and said, “There aren’t many rivers left around the country as beautiful and pure as the Namekagon. We should leave it as it is. I’ll have to be two hundred years old before I let the utilities cross our beloved river.” Footage from this event was recently shown on Wisconsin Public Television in “Beyond Earth Day and Beyond: Gaylord Nelson’s Good Fight”.

After talking with several bona-fide environmentalists about Nelson’s conservation legacy, during the film, the camera zooms in on Governor Jim Doyle.  Standing next to a painting of Gaylord Nelson, Nelson’s fierce, blue eyes fixing us, Governor Doyle mouths platitudes about Nelson’ contributions.  The Governor’s voice is inauthentic and shameful.  You see, unlike the conservationist Gaylord Nelson, Doyle supports building the giant line across the wild Namekagon River.  He’s taken thousands of dollars in contributions from the utilities to grease the deal.

In fact Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle is poised to sign into law a pro-utility bill, 437, which would allow utilities to "take", through eminent domain, public lands.

This seems to be the exact opposite of what Gaylord Nelson would do.

(the governor's phone number, by the way, is 608 266 1212...)

For a democrat governor to win in Wisconsin he/she needs a strong majority in Milwaukee and northwest Wisconsin.  For Governor Jim Doyle to get re-elected and honor the father of Earth Day, he should reverse his position on building the giant Arrowhead transmission line through northwestern Wisconsin’s public lands, parks, rivers and wetlands.

He should think more like Gaylord.
